Have you ever wondered what Christians meant when they said they were "saved"? Maybe you asked yourself "what are they saved from?"
First of all, every question or concern you have is valid and God can handle them all. Keep asking and keep seeking - He promises to answer. He isn't offended at the idea of you using the brain He gave you to learn more about Him.
Salvation: "Salvation" involves being rescued from something and set free to be something else. When Christians say they are saved, they are talking about two things:
- Being rescued from the enemy's stronghold
- Being set free to live in God's loving will forever
Colossians 1:13 "For He has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son He loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins."
- When you are saved, you are rescued from the devil and his schemes.
- The lie that "life without God is good", like the lie that "the fruit is good", becomes obvious.
- When you are saved, you are brought into the kingdom with the Son of God.
- The end of your life changes from eternal separation from God in hell, to eternal relationship with God in heaven.
- When you are saved, you are redeemed (bought back)
- God made you. Satan kidnapped you and convinced you life was better with Him. God brought you home to true love and freedom.
- When you are saved, you are forgiven of your sins
- The mistakes you made and the intentional wrongs you did against God are wiped clean.
Romans 6:22 "But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the fruit you get leads to sanctification and its end, eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord."
- When you are saved, you are delivered from sin, now you have liberty
- What once felt like freedom is now clearly chains keeping you from God. You can now experience life as it should have been - with God, free from distractions of "fake gold"
- When you are saved, you become a servant of God - giving yourself fully to Him
- Being a servant of God is a choice, like making a meal for the person you love, it's not harsh slavery as we know it in the U.S. It's a commitment - a special bond as a 'thank you'.
- When you are saved, you become sanctified (more holy)
- God gives us what we need to become more like Him and that is what it means to work out your salvation - you are saved, but becoming sanctified.
- When you are saved, you inherit eternal life - the Kingdom of God
- Life was always eternal, but after salvation, you now have eternal life instead of suffering
- When you are saved, death no longer has power over you
- When the bible says the wages of sin are death, that means you earn (like a paycheck) death for your sin, but salvation erases your sin and so now you don't need to be afraid of death because it's only a temporal thing - you will be alive again with Christ one day.
- When you are saved, you have been given a free gift - eternal life through Jesus
- Salvation is a gift. It is not something a person can earn by being good. Salvation is freely offered by the blood of Jesus.
If you choose to receive the free gift of what God has to offer you - forgiveness of sin and eternal life through the belief in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, then you are saved! This new chance at eternal life is a commitment or a bond to God as He sanctifies you until the day you see Him face to face.
