What Does It Mean to Walk in the Spirit?

Walking in the Spirit means allowing the Holy Spirit to lead our thoughts, decisions, words, and actions instead of allowing our flesh to control us.

1. God Desires to Walk With Us

Genesis 1:2; John 1:1–14

God desires a relationship with us. Jesus is God manifested in the flesh, and through the Holy Spirit, God dwells within us.

2. The Holy Spirit Is Our Helper

John 14:26

Jesus promised not to leave us alone. The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, Teacher, and Guide. He reminds us of God's Word and helps us live for Him.

3. The Holy Spirit Points Us to Jesus

John 15:26; John 16:7–14

The Holy Spirit empowers us to share Jesus, convicts us of sin, leads us into truth, and glorifies Christ.

4. Unity in the Spirit Brings Freedom

When believers come together in unity and allow the Holy Spirit to lead, lives can be changed, bondages can be broken, and people can experience deliverance.

5. We Must Overcome the Desires of the Flesh

Galatians 5:16–17

The flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit.

Just because God delivered you from something doesn't mean it will never try to come back!

• Old habits can resurface.

• Old relationships can pull us backward.

• Old desires can tempt us again.

But temptation does not mean you have lost your deliverance!

Your past may try to call you, but you don't have to answer!

6. The Battle Between the Flesh and the Spirit

Romans 7:15–25

Paul describes the struggle of wanting to do right but finding himself doing the very things he hates.

Sometimes we know what is right but still allow our flesh to take control.

Paul recognized that he could not overcome this battle in his own strength. He needed Jesus!

Closing: I Cannot Make It Without the Holy Spirit!

I need Him when temptation comes, when my emotions get out of control, and when my flesh wants something different from what God desires.

God didn't save us and leave us to figure out how to live right on our own. He gave us His Spirit!

Walking in the Spirit means depending on the Holy Spirit to help us overcome our flesh and live a life that pleases God.

Am I allowing the Holy Spirit to lead my life, or am I allowing my flesh to lead me?
